FREEDOM, First Unit of Study (approximately 10 weeks, August-November)
The unit of study for the 1st and 2nd grade students is Freedom: The Underground Railroad. Conversations and hands on projects have revolved around what is slavery, defining and understanding the Underground Railroad, and how the rich traditions of the African slaves have been passed down through the generations.
What the students have learned is what a strong spirited and brave group of people the African slaves were. Were it not for their bravery and the bravery of the many diverse people that assisted in delivering the slaves to the Northern United States and Canada, we as African-Americans would not have the opportunities we have now.
